Suspected ‘robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ in Magura

A suspected ringleader of ‘robbers’ was killed by police in an alleged ‘gunfight’ at Baliadanga Mandartola in sadar upazila of Magura early Monday.The deceased was Ujjal Sheikh, 37, son of Aul Sheikh, a resident of Dhalohara village.Three constables – Ekram Hossain, Nayeb Ali and Rafiqul Islam – received minor injuries during the ‘gunfight,’ the police said.The police also recovered a foreign-made pistol, four bullets, machete and a saw from the spot.Magura assistant superintendent of police, Shudarshan Kumar Roy, said a team of sadar police led by its officer-in-charge Jahangir Hossain was patrolling Baliadanga Mandartola area along the Magura-Narail road at around 1:45am when they came across the ‘robbers’ team.’


The outlawed persons were taking preparation to rob bus passengers by felling trees on the road, he said.As the police attempted to put the tree branches off the road, the robbers opened fire at them, prompting police to retaliate.The law enforcers fired some 19 rounds of bullets when most of the gang members retreated, Shudarshan Kumar said.Then the police found bullet-wounded Ujjal on the spot and took him to Magura Sadar Hospital where the duty-doctor declared him dead, he said.
Ujjal had six cases pending against him. Those charges include murder, robbery and mugging.
