Authorities do not permit Koko’s burial at army graveyard

Kalyan Party chairman Syed Md Ibrahim on Tuesday said they did not get permission to bury Arafat Rahman Koko in Banani army graveyard. ‘For any unknown reason,’ he said, the authorities did not permit to bury the body of the youngest son of Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia and former president Ziaur Rahman, there. The chief of Kalyan Party, a partner of BNP-led coalition, was addressing pressmen at Khaleda’s Gulshan office this noon. According to the armed forces, all army men either in service or retired and their family members and relatives – parents, spouses, offspring, and in-law parents enjoy the right to be buried there. Ibrahim insists the rule also applies to Arafat because he was a son of a military man. However, the burial place will be announced later, he added. Meanwhile the body of Arafat Rahman Koko reached Dhaka after flying from Malaysia on Tuesday morning. The body has been taken to Gulshan party office where Khaleda Zia will see her son for the last time. Arafat’s body will be kept at the Gulshan office till 3:00pm for people to pay their tributes. The funeral prayer of Arafat Rahman will be held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Asr prayers today, instead of in front of BNP central office in Naya Paltan in Dhaka. Arafat Rahman died of a heart attack in Malaysia on Saturday.
