Kamaruzzaman’s death warrant issued.

An International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday sent warrant for death of condemned war criminal Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman to the Inspector General of Prison and Dhaka district magistrate.ICT deputy registrar in-charge Aftab Uz Zaman and a dispatcher Sirajul Islam carried the copies of the warrant wrapped with red cloth to the persons. They left the tribunal at around 1:00pm.Earlier in the morning, the ICT-2 judges signed the warrant, confirmed a source in the tribunal.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday released the full verdict that earlier had upheld death sentence for Kamaruzzaman for his crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971.

ICT registrar Mostafizur Rahman told New Age that he had received a copy of the apex court verdict Wednesday evening. He said that he would place it before the ICT-2 Thursday for the issuance of the warrant for the execution of Kamaruzzaman’s death sentence. On November 3, three out of four judges of the apex court bench in a short order upheld the ICT-2 verdict that had handed death sentence to Kamaruzzaman finding him guilty of orchestrating and participating in atrocities at Sohagpur village, to make it ‘widows village,’ on July 25, 1971 when 120 people were killed and many wives were raped. The majority verdict echoed the trial court findings that Kamaruzzaman had formed the Al-Badr force in greater Mymensingh and then participated and assisted in the mass killings of the male population of Sohagpur and raped the widows and termed the crimes as ‘inhuman’ and ‘gruesome’.

Kamaruzzaman deserves no sympathy for such behaviour and crimes said the judges in their observations. The majority verdict written by chief justice SK Sinha said that they found no difference between the conduct of Kamaruzzaman and that of a beast. The dissenting judge, Justice Md. Abdul Wahhab Miah disagreeing with the majority opinion said that Kamaruzzaman was neither the chief organizer of the Al-Badar Bahini nor the chief of the Al-Badars.Kamaruzzaman was an Al-Badar Bahini member and did not have any advisory role or control over the Al-Badar in contemplating and taking steps in the commission of ‘large scale massacre’ by raiding Sohagpur on July 25,1971, as the prosecution alleged, said Justice Wahhab Miah. The Investigation Officer neither in his report nor in his deposition stated that Kamaruzzaman was also Razakar force chief at Sherpur, he said.

He reduced Kamaruzzaman’s death sentence to life term saying he found the evidence of his involvement and presence in the killing of the husband of prosecution witness Hasen Banu in Shohagpur. He acquitted Kamaruzzaman from four other charges. The majority verdict acquitted Kamaruzzaman of one out of five charges for which the ICT-2 had on May 9, 2013 sentenced him to death.
