AVIJIT KILLING Dhaka agrees to engage FBI.

The government has responded positively to the US offer to engage Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to find out the killers of the writer and blogger Avijit Roy. The foreign minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali conveyed the decision to a group of top foreign diplomats who met the minister to discuss the current political situation in Dhaka Sunday. The foreign minister conveyed the decision of the government ‘to positively respond to the US offer to engage the FBI in unearthing the motive and real culprits behind the murder’, said a foreign ministry press release. The diplomats attending the briefing reiterated their concern over the continued violence, and underscored the need for the people of Bangladesh to find a solution to the prevailing situation. ‘They encouraged confidence-building measures – including the de-escalation of Bangladesh’s political conflict – in the interest of fostering safety, stability, growth, human rights and democracy in Bangladesh,’ the Australian High Commission said in a press release. The diplomats also recalled their previous statements on events in Bangladesh, and those by the UN, and the representatives called for an end to the current violence. Ambassadors, high commissioners and charge d’ affairs of Australia, Canada, Denmark, EU, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States met the minister.
