Khaleda won’t appear in trial court on Mar 4, lawyer says.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s lawyer on Sunday said that she would not appear in the lower court on March 4 until the High Court disposes of the petition seeking transfer of two cases against her to another court. On February 25, the Special Judge’s Court-3 in Dhaka issued warrant for arresting Khaleda Zia as she did not appear in the court during proceedings in Zia Orphanage Trust Fund and Zia Charitable Trust Fund embezzlement cases on ‘security grounds’. Speaking at a press briefing on the Supreme Court premises, Khaleda Zia’s senior counsel Khandker Mahbub Hossain said that the Special Judge’s Court-3 had issued the warrant illegally though her petition relating to transfer of the cases from the current court to another one had been pending at the High Court.

Khandker Mahbub said the Anti-Corruption Commission lawyer should now file a petition with the trial court seeking withdrawal of the arrest warrant for Khaleda. He said that Khaleda’s petition for transferring the cases was submitted on Sunday to the bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Md Khasruzzaman, who are expected to hear it on Tuesday. As the trial court on January 15 had rejected Khaleda’s petition seeking transfer of the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases from the Special Judge’s Court-3 to another court on grounds of ‘no confidence’, Khaleda did file a petition with the High Court on January 28 challenging the lower court’s order.
