Build movement against drugs: home minister

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Wednesday underscored the need for building a social movement against bad impact of drug abuse to protect all including youths of the society.
‘Build social movement against bad impact of drug abuse to protect all, including youths of the society,’ the home minister said while addressing a programme as the chief guest at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.
Department of Narcotics Control organised the programme marking International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
United National General Council announced 26th June of 1987 as the day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking to protect inhabitants of the world from bad impact of drug abuse. Since 1988, Bangladesh and other countries across the globe have been observing the day.
As Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated across the country this year on 26th June, the government decided to observe the day July on 26.
The home minister said that his department has been working to free the country from drug abuse following the prime minister’s zero tolerance policy. 
‘Police, BGB, RAB and Coast Guard have taken initiatives to strengthen the DNC’s work against drug abuse,’ he said, adding, ‘Manpower of the DNC has already increased changing its organisational structure.’
Chaired by the DNC director general Md Jamaluddin, the programme was also addressed among others, by secretary to the Security Service Department of Home Ministry Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, members of the board of Department of Narcotics Control advocate Abdul Baset Majumder and Arup Ratan Chowdhury.
