Dhaka’s rail link with northern, southern regions halted

The rail communications of Dhaka with northern and southern regions in the country were halted as soil under the rail tracks was washed away due to strong current of flood water in Pungli bridge area under Kalihati upazila in Tangail early Sunday.

Locals said they managed to stop Dhaka-bound intercity train Nilsagar Express from Nilphamari nearby the spot.

Thousands of passengers who got stranded at different stations were suffering heavily due to the suspension of rail communications.

Gharinda railway station master Jalal Uddin said the soil under the rail tracks crumbled and washed away (due to flood) around 5:00am, posing a risk for train movement.

The higher authorities were already informed, he added.

Two more trains were stranded at Mirzapur and Gharinda rail stations, our correspondent reported.
