CEC’s remark a tactic to bring BNP to election: Quader

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Monday said chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda’s remark that Bangladesh Nationalist Party founder Ziaur Rahman had restored multi-party democracy in the country might be a ‘stratagem’ to persuade BNP to join the upcoming general election.
He, however, said that his party, Awami League, would ascertain the CEC’s statement during its dialogue with Election Commission scheduled to be held on October 18.
The minister made the remarks in response to the questions from journalists at Krishibid Institution in Dhaka where he spoke as the chief guest at a seminar marking the World Food Day.
Qader said BNP secretary general Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had become very happy to hear the words from the CEC and he became hopeful about the election.
He also said that Awami League wanted the Election Commission to uphold neutrality while making remarks and holding elections.
As to the remark made by CEC Nurul Huda, Quader said the CEC’s neutrality had become questionable for this remark though he did not made it in public place like press conference.
Awami League did not expect it, he added.
On Sunday, the CEC lauded BNP’s founder Ziaur Rahman saying that Zia had restored multi-party democracy and BNP had many contributions as a big political party in the country while delivering an opening statement during a dialogue with a 16-member BNP delegation at the EC secretariat.
