Allies censure govt failure to contain price hikes

Leaders of the Awami League-led alliance on Monday reiterated their dissatisfaction at the failure of the government to control the price hikes of the essentials.
The leaders of the alliance partners at a meeting at the political office of the AL president Sheikh Hasina said that the common people were suffering much to run their families facing price hikes of the essentials.
Jatiya Party faction secretary general Sheikh Shahidul Islam mentioned at the meeting that the people would not cast their vote for the alliance candidates in the upcoming general election if the price hikes of the essentials were not controlled.
Emerging from the meeting, Workers Party of Bangladesh politburo member Quamrul Ahsan told New Age that the leaders of the alliance partners also expressed their dissatisfactions over the activities of the alliance.
He mentioned that the prices of rice, onion and vegetables were not controlled so far.
Workers Party of Bangladesh president Rashed Khan Menon, also the social welfare minister, demanded strengthening the activities of the alliance.
He proposed that the alliance could nominate a single mayoral candidate in the upcoming city polls.
Menon proposed for starting preparations for the next general election.
He also proposed for holding joint rallies in each division of the country, on behalf of the AL-led alliance and also holding a meeting with AL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina with the leaders of the alliance.
Spokesman of the alliance and Mohammad Nasim, also the health minister, said that the AL-led alliance would nominate a single mayoral candidate in the by-polls to the Dhaka North City Corporation scheduled for February 26.
The AL central leaders Dipu Moni, BM Mozammel Haque, leaders of the alliance, Dilip Barua, Wazedul Islam Khan Shahin Akhter , Asit Baran Roy and others attended the meeting.
