NCC files case over attempts on mayor Ivy’s life

The Narayanganj City Corporation on Tuesday filed a police case against named and unnamed associates of ruling Awami League’s local MP AKM Shamim Osman for their recent alleged attempts on the life of mayor Selina Hayat Ivy.
Nine named accused, all close associates of Shamim Osman, include, local Juba League leader Niazul Islam, river port city AL joint secretary general Shah Nizam, organizing secretary Jakirul Alam Helal, city chapter Juba League president Shahadat Hossain Sanju, district Shecchashebok League unit president Juel Hossain and its members Jane Alam Biplob, Nasir Uddin and M Chancal and district Chhatra League general secretaryMizanur Rahman Sujon.
Seven days after the incident, NCC law officer MA Sattar filed the case with the sadar police station.
According to the complaint, it was a preplanned attempt on the mayor’s life, additional police superintendent of Narayanganj Mustafizur Rahman told New Age.
He said that the police would take action after holding probes against the accused.
He also said that despite continuous hunts accused Niazul could not be arrested though he had openly carried arms during the January 16 attacks.
Ivy and at least 50 others close to her suffered severe injuries in the attacks by Shamim’s activists in his presence to foil a road march by Ivy and her followers to free the sidewalks in the river port city.
Police said that one day after the incident, accused Niazul filed a police case alleging that his pistol had been snatched when
he faced attacks.
The police said that they recorded his complaint as a general diary.
A day after the incident, Ivy was admitted to Lab Aid Hospital in the capital as she suffered brain hemorrhage after falling down at her office room.
On Tuesday, following release by the hospital, Ivy told reporters that she will continue her efforts to free the Narayanganj City for the grip of fears, to fulfill the commitments she had made during her election campaigns.
‘I would continue my efforts under prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s supervision,’ she said.
She also said that Hasina regularly inquired about her health condition when she was in the hospital.
She said that none in the port city would allow any outside to poke their nose in the affairs of the city corporation.
As the mayor, she said, she might be a city leader, but none should forget that at first she was a nominal worker of AL as well as PM Hasina.
Ivy expressed her gratitude to Narayanganj people for saving her life during the latest armed attacks.
She said that she had ideological disputes but no political or family feuds with anyone.
