PROTEST AT BCL ATTACK Strike at edn instts Jan 29

Students against Repression and Progressive Students’ Alliance on Wednesday called a countrywide strike at educational institutions for January 29 in protest at Chhatra League’s attack on protesters on Tuesday.
Students against Repression, a platform waging movement at Dhaka University demanding punishment of the BCL activists who assaulted and molested students in a demonstration, and the PSA, a platform of left-leaning student bodies, at separate press conferences at Madhu’s Canteen of the university announced the strike. 
The left alliance will also hold a solidarity rally at Raju Memorial Monument on Friday and countrywide demonstrations on January 28 against the BCL attack that sparked protests at other public universities.
Meanwhile, at least 15
leaders and activists of the Alliance were injured at Chittagong University on Wednesday when Chhatra League activists attacked a rally protesting at attack on DU students, reported New Age Chittagong correspondent.
Addressing the press conference at DU, Masud Al Mahadi, a Master’s student of mass communication and journalism, also convener of Students against Repression, demanded exemplary punishment of the Chhatra League assaulters, immediate resignation of DU proctor Golam Rabbani and withdrawal of a case filed against general students.
Chhatra League goons, Masud alleged, in a fit of frenzy carried out the coordinated and pre-planned attack on peaceful protest which left about 50 students injured including females.
He also condemned Chhatra League and the university administration’s statement terming the allegation of attacks ‘nothing but blatant lies’.
The left alliance also placed a four-point charter of demands, including arrest and trial of Chhatra League activists who attacked Tuesday’s programme, exemplary punishment for attackers on students on January 15, withdrawal of case and medical expenses of injured students and immediately announcement of election to student unions.

At the news conference, Imran Habib, a leader of alliance, apprehended that moves were on to destabilise the university to foil DUCSU election as there was a court order for holding election to the union in six months.
At a programme in the capital, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on the day said that action would be taken if any Chhatra League activist was found involved in attacking students on Tuesday.
Ain O Salish Kendra on Wednesday called on the Dhaka University authorities to act responsibly as the guardian of the students in response to the recent unrests at the university.
It also condemned the Chhatra League atrocities on the students protesting at sexual assault, torture and harassment.
Expressing concern over the attack and assaults, ASK in a press release issued on January 24 asked the DU authorities to take punitive measures against the perpetrators following proper investigation.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union Barisal unit in a protest programme also demanded punishment of Chhatra League assaulters, reported our Barisal correspondent.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra League’s central president Saifur Rahman Sohag in another protest programme in front of VC office demanded punishment of ‘left terrorists who want to destabilise the university’.
Dhaka University Teachers Association in a statement expressed concern over the recent incidents inside VC’s office of the university terming it ‘an evil attempt by outsiders to destabilise the university’. 
Earlier on Tuesday, waves of attacks launched by Chhatra League activists injured around 50 students who were demonstrating at Dhaka University demanding withdrawal of a case against them and punishment of the BCL activists who assaulted and molested students on January 15.
