Revision of quota system demanded

Hundreds of students on Saturday morning staged demonstration at the base of Raju memorial sculpture on the Dhaka University campus demanding the quota provisions be scrapped to allow recruitment on merit basis only for Bangladesh Civil Service and other government jobs.
Students, under the banner of General Students’ Rights Protection Council, demanded introduction of unified pass marks for all candidates of BCS preliminary test and review of quota system in Bangladesh Civil Services and other government jobs.
They also demanded fixation of 10 per cent quota instead of existing 56 per cent among others as only 44 per cent quota was fixed for appointments on merit in all government jobs.
While addressing the rally, the agitating students said that there should be equality of opportunity for all citizens in respect of employment or office in the service of the Republic as per the constitution.
They also announced to hold protest rally at all educational institutions across the country on Thursday demanding a reform of existing quota system in various government recruitment process including BCS examinations.
The protesters, however, left the place peacefully around 12:15pm. Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain said that for the sake of security of the visitors of Amar Ekushey Book Fair, they tried to keep the area free from any kind of agitation programme.
