LAWYER RATHIS MURDER Accused Milon dies in custody

A 30-year-old accused in the murder of lawyer Rathis Chandra Bhowmik died in the prison cell of Rangpur Medical College Hospital Friday night.
The deceased, Modon Chandra Milon, 30, of Dimla Bororangpur of Rangpur city, assistant and motorbike driver of Rathis Chandra Bhowmik, died nine days after he was shown arrested on April 4 night in the case filed over the murder.
Milon’s family, however, alleged that police picked up Milon on April 2 and produced him before a court on April 5, a day after Rathish was found dead.
‘He was beaten severely in detention and when he was produced before the court he was very sick,’ one of Milon’s family members alleged.
‘We have nothing to say now as he (Milon) is now dead,’ Milon’s nephew Tapan Kumar Roy told New Age.
He was produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate court on April 5 and the court sent him to jail.
Jailer of Rangpur central jail Amzad Hossain said Milon was brought to jail on April 5 night and he was suffering from illness.
‘We sent him to the prison cell of RMCH the same night for treatment. He died at the hospital Friday night while under treatment,’ he said.
The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination, he said.
Kotowali police station officer-in-charge Babul Miah said that they arrested Rathish’s wife Snigdha Sarkar, Kamrul Islam, Sobuj Islam and Rokunuzaman based on information extracted form Milon whom they arrested on April 4.
He said that Snikdha bought a mobile SIM against Milon’s name and she used to talk to Kamrul using the SIM to plot the killing. ‘Milon knew about the conspiracy.’
All the four — Snigdha, Kamrul, Sobuj and Rokunuzaman — have made confessional statements in the killing.
Rathish, who went missing on March 30 and found dead on April 4, was a prosecutor in two cases in the murders of Japanese national Hoshi Kunio in 2015 and shrine caretaker Rahmat Ali in Rangpur.
He was also the Rangpur division trustee of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, president of the district Puja Udjapan Parishad, and member of Sammilita Sanskritik Jote.
