Rangamati upazila chairman shot dead

The chairman of Naniarchar upazila parishad, Shaktiman Chakma, was shot to death by some unidentified miscreants in Naniarchar Bazar area in Rangamati on Thursday morning.

Rangamati superintendent of police Md Alamgir Kabir confirmed the incident.

The deceased, Shaktiman Chakma, 51, was vice-president of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS -- MN Larma faction).

The incident took place around 10:300am.

Md Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Naniarchar Police Station, said a group of miscreants swooped on Shaktiman and opened fire on him while he was going to office, leaving him critically injured, reports United News of Bangladesh.

Later, he was rushed to Rangamati Sadar Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead.

The victim’s driver Rupak Chakma was also injured during the incident, police said.

The motive behind the killing could not be known immediately, the OC added.

Meanwhile, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader during attending a press briefing held at the secretariat on Thursday said that Shaktiman Chakma might have been killed over internal conflict.

He, also Awami League’s general secretary, said he directed the police to find out the culprits immediately.
