HC asks EC to hold GCC polls by June 28

The Appellate Division on Thursday asked the Election Commission to hold Gazipur City Corporation polls by June 28.

A four-judge bench headed by chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after vacating the High Court stay on the elections scheduled for May 15.

Earlier, the Appellate Division on Wednesday deferred until this morning the hearing on two appeals filed by two mayoral candidates seeking elections to the Gazipur City Corporation.

The High Court stayed the elections on May 6 hearing a writ petition filed by local Awami League activist ABM Azharul Islam Suraj, also the chairman of Shimulia union parishad of Savar, on the plea of anomalies in inclusion of some areas of Savar in Gazipur city.

A four-judge bench headed by chief justice Syed Mahmud Hossain deferred the hearing as Election Commission’s lawyer Obaidur Rahman Mostafa sought adjournment of the hearing for a day.

Obaidur pleaded that the apex court should hold hearing of the two appeals filed by and Bangladesh Nationalist Party mayoral candidate Hassan Uddin Sarker and ruling Awami League mayoral candidate Jahangir Alam along with the commission’s appeal filed later in the day.

On Tuesday, the Appellate Division chamber judge posted for Wednesday the hearing in the appeals the two candidates filed earlier seeking the election cancelling the stay of the polls.

Rokanuddin Mahmud appeared for writ petitioner Azhar, BNP candidate was represented by Zainul Abedin and AL candidate by SM Shafiqul Islam Babul.
