EC plans EVM use in next general elections

The Election Commission is planning to use electronic voting machines in the next general elections in Bangladesh to be held before January 28, 2019.
Commission secretary M Helaluddin Ahmed told reporters at his office on Sunday that the commission was planning to address the concerns and complaints of political parties in this regard before making a final decision.
Before the general elections, the commission would use electronic voting machines in different elections to local government bodies, he said.
The commission had gone for selective use of the machines at some polling stations in the recent local government elections, he added.
He said that electronic voting machines would help stop ballot stuffing.
In May 2017, chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda said that EVMs would be used in the next parliamentary polls if all political parties reached a consensus.
In November 2017, he said that EVM would not be used in the next general elections as the commission was not prepared for it.
Replying to a query, the commission secretary said that the commission selected only two parties — the Bangladesh Congress and the Gana Azadi League — for further field-level investigation for party registration.
He said that the commission was also reviewing the application of Trinamul BNP submitted by Former Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Nazmul Huda as it was submitted after the deadline.
He said that Trinamul BNP field the application with a High Court order that asked the commission to take cognisance of the application.
