Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday asked the government to immediately transfer the party’s ailing imprisoned chairperson Khaleda Zia to United Hospital in the capital for her better treatment.
He rejected the government’s offer for her treatment at Combined Military Hospital.
On Tuesday, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said
Khaleda Zia would be offered treatment at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka as she was unwilling to take treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
Khaleda’s younger brother Shamim Eskander appealed to the home ministry on Tuesday for her immediate treatment at United Hospital.
Meanwhile, BNP vice-chairman and senior lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain at a press conference on Wednesday demanded the party chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s release from the jail on parole to facilitate her immediate treatment before Eid.
Speaking at a news conference, Khandker Mahbub, also Khaleda Zia’s lawyer, said that her quick release would not be possible now through legal process since the Appellate Division was scheduled to hear two appeals filed by the government against her bails granted by the High Court Division earlier.
He said that the Appellate Division is scheduled to hear the appeals on June 24.
Addressing an iftar party in the city, Mirza Fakhrul said that the jail code nowhere stated that treatment would only have to be provided at government hospitals.
He said BNP declared that the party would bear the all expenses of Khaleda’s treatment at United Hospital.
The secretary general said that the government was delaying in Khaleda’s treatment to push her life into ‘risk’.
The secretary general said BNP always believed in power of people and succeeded in movement with the help of people.
The party did not do politics with the mercy of anybody, he reiterated.
He said Khaleda was the symbol of democracy, the country’s independence and sovereignty, saying that people would not allow the conspiracy to compromise the country’s independence and sovereignty.
Fakhrul said there was no alternative to forging national unity for freeing Khaleda Zia from jail and restore people’s rights.
He said nothing was possible without Khaleda, so she must be freed.
The government must meet the demands of poll-time neutral government, reconstitution of Election Commission, dissolution of parliament and deployment of army during election, he said.
Otherwise, the government would have to bear the responsibility, he warned.
Former Dhaka University vice-chancellor Emajuddin Ahamed said the strong movement must be launched.
Bangladesh Labour Party faction, a component of BNP-led alliance, hosted the iftar party and prayer session at a city hotel seeking good health of Khaleda Zia.
Its president Mustafizur Rahman presided over the iftar party attended by the alliance leaders.
