SC upholds Khaleda’s bail in Comilla arson case

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the ad-interim bail granted to Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia by the High Court Division in a case relating to burning a covered van at Chouddagra, Comilla on January 25, 2015 during the countrywide non-stop blockade called by BNP.

A three-judge bench chaired by Chief Justice in its order also asked the HC to dispose in seven days of the appeal filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the Comilla special tribunal-1 order that was sitting on her bail petition she filed in April 23.

The bench issued the order after dismissing the government petition seeking cancellation of her bail granted by the HC on May 28.

Earlier on Monday, the SC fixed the date after completing hearing of the leave-to-appeal petition filed against the High Court order.

On February 8, Khaleda Zia was sent to jail after a special court sentenced her to five years' rigorous imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
