BNP rejects Gazipur poll, AL finds it free and fair

The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Wednesday rejected the mayoral poll to the Gazipur city bringing allegations of ‘vote robbery’ which was hit back by the ruling Awami League saying that the people had rejected BNP.
Awami League’s mayoral candidate Md Jahangir Alam elected mayor in Gazipur election defeating his rival BNP’s candidate Hasan Uddin Sarker by a big margin of 4.10 lakh votes on Tuesday amid allegations of widespread irregularities.
Giving reaction, BNP general secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press conference said the party rejected the election with ‘hatred’.
‘We demand re-election to the Gazipur city corporation poll cancelling the results,’ he said at a news conference at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office.
Fakhrul dubbed the elections as ‘fun’ and ‘scandalous chapter.’
‘The government snatched away BNP’s victory with direct assistance from the Election Commission,’ Fakhrul said.
‘The Gazipur election is just the continuation of the Khulna city election that saw a new trend of vote robbery,’ he said.
Fakhrul said the government used all state machineries to rig the elections and covered up the truth threatening mass media.
Awami league general secretary Obaidul Quader reacted to the BNP’s allegations and criticised the party’s rejection of the ‘free and fair’ election.
At a press conference at the party president’s office in Dhanmondi said the people would reject BNP if they reject the result of the Gazipur City poll.
‘The Gazipur election was held in free and fair manner and the voters casted their votes freely,’ said Obaidul Quader, also road transport and bridges minister.
‘The BNP leaders are trying to make Gazipur election controversial without valid reason,’ he said.
‘The people rejected the anarchic politics of BNP,’ the minister said, adding that the Gazipur people took revenge of killing of AL leader Ahsanullah Master.
Quader thanked the Election Commission for holding the ‘credible’ election and also thanked the people of Gazipur for casting their votes in favour of Awami League.
