HC reschedules Shahidul Alam’s bail application hearing for next week

The High Court Division on Wednesday told the lawyer of acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam that his bail application would be heard next week.
Shahidul Alam has been detained in a case filed by the police under the controversial Section 57 of the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006 alleging that he had provoked school children’s movement for safety on roads.
During a brief hearing, his lawyer Sara Hossain submitted that Shahidul Alam filed the bail application in the High Court Division because metropolitan sessions judge Imrul Kayes declined to hear his bail application before September 11.
A vacation bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman asked Sara Hossain to place to it standing decisions of the High Court Division and the Appellate Division in a similar case.
The bench said that it needed time to study the standing decisions before hearing Shahidul Alam’s bail application.
Sara Hossain requested the bench to hear Shahidul Alam’s bail petition without such delay considering the matter’s urgency.
On August 20 judge Imrul Kayes rejected Sara’s request to hear the bail application since Shahidul Alam has been ill in the jail custody.
On August 12 a metropolitan magistrate sent Shahidul Alam to the Dhaka Central Jail without hearing his lawyer after the DB produced him in the court after interrogating him in remand for seven days.
In his statement Shahidul Alam told the magistrate’s court said that he had been tortured physically and mentally in the custody since the DB picked him up from his home on August 5.
Later, Sara Hossain told New Age that Shahidul Alam was in good health before he was picked up.
Sara Hossain was assisted by Supreme Court lawyers Manto Chandra Ghosh and Jyotirmoy Barua.
