Contempt petition against DU officials for not holding DUCSU polls

Fifteen former Dhaka University students on Wednesday filed a petition for charging Dhaka University vice-chancellor, proctor and treasurer with contempt of court for violating a High Court order asking them to hold election to Dhaka University Central Students Union.
The vacation High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam would hear the petition on Sunday, petitioners’ lawyer Manzill Murshid told the reporters.
He said that the petition was filed against Dhaka University vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman, proctor AKM Golam Rabbani and treasurer Kamal Uddin as the university on September 9, in reply to his legal notice issued on September 4, said nothing about what steps they had taken so far to hold the DUCSU polls.
On January 17, the High Court bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan asked the Dhaka University authorities to take steps for holding DUCSU polls at a ‘suitable time, preferably within six months.’
The bench had also asked the home ministry to maintain law and order during the DUCSU polls.
The bench had observed that the legitimate expectations of Dhaka University students to cast their vote had been violated by not holding DUCSU elections in over 27 years in a row since 1990 though the Dhaka University Order 1973 required holding the elections every year.
The court also said that the Dhaka University senate cannot be formed properly without five elected representatives of the DUCSU.
The Dhaka University senate has been formed without the five DUSCU representatives for long, it said.
The court had pronounced the verdict in a writ petition 25 Dhaka University students jointly filed in April 2012.
