Medical board recommends hospitalising Khaleda

A new medical board comprising of physicians from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Sunday recommended getting former prime minister and BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, admitted to a hospital with specialists in all departments for her proper treatment.

She is now imprisoned in the Old Dhaka Central Jail.

The medical board formed by the government on Thursday also expressed the view that it considered the BSMMU was the best possible referral hospital available with all the facilities and specialist doctors, BSMMU director brigadier general Abdullah Al Harun said at a news briefing on Sunday.

He said that the medical board advised carrying out some tests on her.

Harun said, ‘If she decides to come here we will welcome her.’

Harun also said, ‘it’s not so that she fell ill suddenly. The Medical Board found in the diseases she has been suffering for long.’

‘She is not in a risky condition,’ said the BSMMU director quoting the medical board’s opinion.

He said that the medical board sent its recommendations to the jail authorities.

BNP leaders said that the medical board’s recommendations reflected the government’s desires.
They expressed fears that Khaleda Zia would not get proper treatment at BSMMU.

Dhaka Central Jail’s jailor Mahabubul Islam Milon told New Age that they were yet to receive ‘any report’ from the medical board.
He said, ‘We would inform Khaleda Zia about the report as soon as we get it.’

The Old Dhaka Central Jail, abandoned until Khaleda Zia was imprisoned there, has been placed under the control of Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj.

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain told New Age that Begum Khaleda Zia would not get proper treatment at BSMMU, as recommended by the medical board constituted by the government.

The board gave the recommendation just as the ‘government wished,' he said.

‘Khaleda Zia had earlier refused to take treatment at BSMMU expressing no confidence on the hospital under the government’s total control.
Another medical board formed by the government earlier had also recommended tohospitalize Khaleda Zia at BSMMU.

On Saturday afternoon, members of the new medical board examined Khaleda Zia for an hour since 3.45 PM in the Old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road.

The board comprises of BSMMU medicine professor Abdul Jalil Chowdhury, Harisul Hoque of cardiology department, Abu Zafar Chowdhury Biru of orthopaedic surgery, Tarik Reza Ali of ophthalmology and Badrunnesa Ahmed of physical medicine department. 
On Thursday, the government appointed the new medical board for examining Khaleda Zia’s health after a seven-member BNP team led by secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met home minister Asaduzzaman Khan and requested him to arrange her treatment at the United Hospital.
