HC grants Mainul’s Division I in jail

The High Court Division on Monday granted Division I facilities in the jail to detained senior Supreme Court lawyer Mainul Hosein, also a former MP and caretaker government adviser.

A bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Mainul’ wife Saju Hosein challenging the legality of keeping him in ordinary ward in the Dhaka Central Jail denying his Division I facilities.

On October 23, a magistrate in Dhaka sent Jatiya Oikya Front’s organiser Mainul Hosein to the Dhaka Central Jail in a defamation case filed against him for calling journalist Masuda Bhatti ‘characterless’ at a live TV talk show on October 16.

The Detective Branch arrested Mainul Hosein from the Uttara residence of Jatiyo Oikya Front leader ASM Abdur Rob hours after a ruling party activist filed the defamation case with the Rangpur magistrate’s court.

Mainul’ lawyer Dr Kamal entitled to get Division I automatically being a former MP, caretaker government adviser, former president of Supreme Court Bar Association and the elder son of renowned journalist Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mian, a close aide of Bangladesh founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Senior lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain submitted that at least 18 defamation cases were filed across the country against Mainul after the prime minister asked ruling Awami League activists at an open press conference to sue him out of the political vengeance.
