Contradicting his party’s parliamentary body’s decision, Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad on Friday said his party would be the main opposition in parliament while he would act as the opposition leader.

In a statement on Friday, JP chairman came up with the announcement contradicting it’s parliamentary party’s decision to join Awami League-led Grand Alliance government.

‘As the JP chairman, I would like to inform the country’s people, party leaders and activists at all levels that JP will act as the main opposition party in the 11th parliament.’

He also said, ‘As the chairman of JP parliamentary party, I’ll be the leader of the opposition while party co-chairman Golam Quader will be deputy opposition leader.’

Ershad said no Jatiya Party MP would be there in the cabinet. ‘I urge the Jatiya Sangsad speaker to take necessary steps in this regard.’

On Thursday, JP parliamentary party decided to join AL-led Grand Alliance government to make contributions to the country’s further development under the leadership of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Party co-chairman GM Quader came up with the announcement after its parliamentary party’s meeting in Parliament.

JP joined the election as a key partner of the AL-led Grand Alliance and bagged 22 seats.

Party senior co-chairman Rowshan Ershad was opposition leader in 10th parliament while some party MPs joined the cabinet.
