Drives continue to free Buriganga, Karnaphuli banks

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority conducted drive at Koylaghat in the city’s Kamrangirchar on Wednesday for the second consecutive day to demolish illegal establishments along the River Buriganga.

A mobile court of BIWTA started the demolition work at around 10:30am.

The drive will continue until 4:00pm today.

Earlier, some 200 illegal establishments, including a three-storey building, were demolished at Nabanchar on the first day of the drive on Tuesday. The eviction drive will continue till February 19.

The BIWTA in its previous eviction drive from January 29 to 31 evicted some 444 illegal establishments along the River Buriganga.

BIWTA identified 609 illegal establishments, including 56 multi-storey buildings, on the banks of the Buriganga from Sadarghat to Gabtoli area and these are being evicted in different phases.

In Chattogram, the drive to demolish illegal structures on the banks of the River Karnaphuli in the port city is underway for the third consecutive day on Wednesday.

A team, led by executive magistrate and assistant commissioner of Patenga Tahmilur Rahman, started the drive in Sadarghat Literage area at around 10:00am.

On Tuesday, the local administration bulldozed some 80 illegal establishments on the second day drive.

Tahmilur Rahman said that the total area stretching from Chaktai to Patenga had been divided into three zones to make the eviction drive easier and a total of 2,187 illegal establishments would be bulldozed.

‘Around 200 structures stretching from Sadarghat to Barik Building area will be removed in the first phases’, he said adding, ‘Fire service and civil defence, Chittagong City Corporation, Chittagong Development Authority, Rapid Action Battalion members and police are taking part in the eviction drive.’
