DU students continue hunger strike

The hunger strike of five Dhaka University students rolled into the second consecutive day on Wednesday demanding DU Central Students’ Union re-election.

They started the strike at the altar of Raju Sculpture on Tuesday evening and vowed to continue until their demands were met.

Four of the protesters contested Monday’s DUCSU election as independent candidates.

Among them, third-year philosophy student Anindya Mondol was a member candidate of Jagannath Hall union.

Tawhid Tanjin, a final-year computer science student, was a transport affairs secretary candidate, while Soyeb Mahmud, a second-year physics student, was a candidate for literature affairs secretary of Shahidulla Hall union.

Md Mainiddin, a second-year population sciences student, contested for cultural affairs secretary of Mohsin Hall Union.

Roni Hossain, a final-year geography student, is a resident of Bijoy Ekattor Hall. He did not contest the election.

DUCSU polls, the first in 28 years, were marred by allegations of irregularities. All panels, except that of Bangladesh Chhatra League, boycotted the election alleging vote fraud.

The BCL panel dominated the polls but its vice-president candidate Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon was defeated by quota reform movement leader Nurul Haq Nur.

VP-elect Nur also demanded re-election to all posts, citing irregularities, and holding them under the supervision of new officials.
