Deadlock continues at Barishal Univ

Barishal University students on Sunday denied withdrawing their agitation programmes without written assurance from the authorities concerned about the decisions, including sending vice-chancellor on leave, taken in a tripartite meeting on Saturday afternoon.
They continued their agitation for the twelfth consecutive day and also organised rally and staged sit-in in front of the academic building of the university.
One of the representatives of the protesting students, Lokman Hossain, said, ‘We have decided to continue agitation till receiving written assurance from the authorities concerned about our demands which have already been accepted.’
He said that they agreed about the decisions of the negotiation meeting but it was verbal.
Meanwhile, BU registrar Hasinur Rahman said that the university dormitories and canteens were reopened on Saturday night as per the decisions of the meeting.
Academic and administrative activities resumed on Sunday morning and BU transport pool started plying vehicles, he said, adding that the order to vacate dormitories was also withdrawn accordingly.
However, employees of the university failed to join office as the agitating students locked all entrances of the campus, the registrar added.
Barishal Education Board chairman and also BU syndicate member Professor Md Yunus said they hoped that the decisions would get approval from the BU syndicate meeting scheduled to be held on April 9 at BU liaison office in Dhaka.
BU vice-chancellor Professor SM Imamul Haque said that he was yet to be informed formally about the decision of the meeting held at the Barishal circuit house.
The VC alleged that he declared closure of the university as law enforcement agencies did not cooperate to maintain normal discipline on the campus.
The students started agitation on March 27.
They alleged that the VC arranged Independence Day programmes on the campus without inviting any student. As the students protested at the act, he branded the students as offspring of razakar on March 26.
On March 29, the VC expressed regret about his comment but that was rejected by the students.
