Bangladesh remembers Rana Plaza victims

People from different walks of life on Wednesday paid homage to the people who died in the country’s worst ever industrial disaster that left over one thousand people dead six years ago.
On this day in 2013, a nine-storey apparel factory building in Savar, 30 kilometres from capital Dhaka, collapsed killing 1,138 people and injuring 2,240 others.
Many of the victims who survived the deadly disaster, along with different labour groups and others, gathered at the collapsed Rana Plaza site in Savar and placed floral wreaths in the morning.
They formed human chains there and demanded more compensation for the survivors.
The protesters said many of the survivors were living in distress without jobs and proper medical treatments.
‘I want justice for the killing of my daughter. I want the hanging of Rana and all others responsible,’ said Phool Mala, as she wailed near the Rana Plaza monument in Savar.
Mala’s daughter Maleka Akter was a worker at the Ether Tex garments factory located on the 6th floor of Rana Plaza.
The families of the deceased, injured people and workers who suffered from the worst industrial accident were still waiting for justice as hardly any progress was made in the trial of 14 cases filed in this regard.
‘Our demand is exemplary punishment of Sohel Rana. The time consumption over the cases should be stopped,’ said Joly Talukder, the general secretary of Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Centre.
Many people also laid floral wreath to the graves of Rana Plaza victims in Jurain graveyard in Dhaka.
