Five killed in ‘gunfights’ in Jashore, Cox’s Bazar, Pabna

At least five people, including two suspected robbers and two Rohingya men, were killed in ‘gunfights’ in Jashore, Cox’s Bazar and Pabna on Tuesday.

In Jashore, a suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight between ‘two gangs of robbers’ on Jashore- Magura Road at village Nangarpur at about 1:45am, said Kotwali police officer in-charge Apurba Hasan.

The OC told New Age that an unidentified man, aged around 42, was declared dead by the attending doctor after he was taken to Jashore General Hospital after a ‘gunfight’ between two gangs of robbers.

Kotwali police sub-inspector Mahbubur Rahman said that being informed by local people, police raided the spot and rescued the victim with bullet injuries and took him to the hospital.

Sensing presence of the police, ‘robbers’ fled the scene, the SI said.

The police also seized a one shooter gun, three bullets, and three sharp weapons from the spot, he added.

In Cox’s Bazar, three people, including two Rohingya men, were killed in ‘gunfights’ in Sadar and Teknaf upazilas early Tuesday.

In Teknaf, two ‘Rohingya human traffickers’ were killed in an alleged gunfight with police at the Marine Drive Road in Shamlarpur area at about 2:00am.

The deceased were identified as Azim Uddin, 22, son of Abdur Rahim, resident of number 23 Rohingya camp in Shamlarpur area and Abdus Salam, 52, son of Rahim Ali, resident of number 15 Rohingya camp in Jamtoli area of Ukhiya.

Teknaf police officer-in-charge Pradip Kumar Das said that acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a drive in the area.

As soon as the team reached the spot, the ‘human traffickers’ opened fire at them that triggered the gunfight, the OC claimed.

The victims were killed on the spot, he added.

The police seized two firearms and five bullets from the spot, the OC said, adding that four policemen were injured in the gunfight.

In Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila, a ‘suspected drug peddler’, Sayedul Mostafa Bulu, 44, son of Jahir Hazi, resident of Pahartoli area, was killed in a reported ‘gunfight’ with police at Katapahar in the early morning.

Police seized 400 Yaba pills, a light gun and two cartridges from the spot, said Faird Uddin Khandaker, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.

Mostofa was accused in several cases, he added.

In Pabna, a ‘suspected robber’, Md Hafizur Rahman Titas, 38, a resident of village Basher Bada, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Sara Jhaudia area of Ishwardi upazila at about 2:30am.

The police said that they arrested Titas from Piyarpur intersection and later, conducted a drive in the area along with him to arrest his accomplices.

As soon as the police team reached the spot, Titas’ associates opened fire at them that triggered the gunfight, the police claimed.

Titash received bullet injuries in the chest when he tried to escape, the police said, adding that He was taken to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead.
