BHOLA CLASHES Man behind FB post identified

The man behind spreading Facebook messenger chat from the ‘hacked’ account of Bhola youth Biplob Chandra Shuvo was identified by the social media giant in Singapore, the investigators in Bangladesh said.

The investigators, however, did not disclose his name, location, religion and the motive behind spreading abusive words on Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SM) and his daughter Fatima.

‘We are in search of the person,’ said an investigator, referring to the Facebook report on which their current operation is based.

The investigator also said that although the Facebook account of Bhola youth Biplob Chandra Shuvo was ‘actually hacked’ by the person, Biplob in past also had some involvement in a number of similar events of hacking.

‘Some 7 youths were found involved in hacking in the recent past,’ the investigator told New Age.

On Monday, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the cooperation was sought from Facebook authority in Singapore to identify the culprits behind the incident in Bhola, which left four people killed on Sunday during a clash between police and demonstrators.

‘We will not spare any of the culprits involved in the crime,’ said the minister at his office on Wednesday in reference to the ongoing investigation over the incident that triggered countrywide protests.

On Sunday, the clashes that erupted between the police and local protesters over the leaked chat of the Facebook messenger hurting religious sentiment of the Muslims left four killed and scores injured at Borhanuddin upazila town.

Recalling the day of incident, the home minister admitted that there was a lack of political leadership at that time of the incident.

According to the Awami League leaders, the senior ruling party leader Tofail Ahmed of neighbouring constituency in Bhola was at Gonobhaban while lawmaker of Borhanuddin constituency Ali Azam Mukul was in Dhaka.

‘I asked Mukul to rush to his area urgently,’ said the minister, adding, ‘I also communicated to other leaders of the district about the urgency of the matter and to bring the situation under control.’

The local lawmaker Ali Azam Mukul said he was aware of the leaked messenger chat and its related development since October 18 and called local district administration and police. A meeting was also held on October 19 where the Islamic preachers promised that no gathering would be held on October 20.

‘We trusted them,’ said Ali Azam, adding ‘I got a call from SP on the fateful day after 10:15am and he was saying they were in danger and were in need of assistance.’

Ali Azam also said that they, after receiving a call from the home minister, rushed to the airport where they were faced with a snarl caused by VVIP movement as president Abdul Hamid was travelling. He also added that finally managed to fly on a private helicopter and reached his area by 2:30pm.

Meanwhile, a group of men, identifying themselves as members of the detective branch of police at Roudrerhat, Dolarhat, Bhola, on Monday night picked up two relatives of Biplob Chandra Shuvo.

None of the police units, however, admitted so far that they made the arrest.

On Tuesday, a host of Islamist groups staged demonstrations in the capital and elsewhere in the country in protest against killing of four people in Borhanuddin and demanded capital punishment to those who made the derogatory comments on the Facebook.

Heavy police contingents have been deployed at the Borhanuddin town and the Border Guard Bangladesh troops are patrolling its roads amid uneasy calm, said locals.

Meanwhile, in a statement, the Jamiat Ulama-E-Islam Bangladesh secretary general Nur Hossain Kasemi called upon the practicing Muslims not to be provoked by the communal instigations.

He said none would be allowed to catch fish in the troubled water over the incident.

He also urged the Muslims to ensure that no damage was done to properties of Hindu community members.

The Islamic preacher also called the government to initiate a judicial inquiry into the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He also called for formulating a law allowing capital punishment for anyone insults Prophet Mohammad (SM).
