MP Selim’s men attack councillor Manik

Supporters of Awami League lawmaker Haji Mohammad Selim of Dhaka 7 attacked Dhaka South City Corporation ward 26 councillor Hasibur Rahman Manik for not mentioning Selim’s name on a plaque of a renovated playground at Lalbagh in Dhaka on Saturday.

Selim’s supporters alleged the councillor intentionally dishonored the local MP.

The South city mayor Sayeed Khokon inaugurated the playground about an hour behind the scheduled of 3:00pm.

Witnesses said Selim with his supporters went to renovated Shaheed Hazi Abdul Alim Playground’s opening event and did not find his name on the plaque stone which angered him.

He himself threw away the public announcement system from the stage and his supporters disconnected of electricity connections there, they said.

Selim’s supporters then vandalised the stage and swooped on Manik and other city corporation officials in presence of Haji Selim but the mayor was absent. Tension prevailed for 30 minutes.

Later, a supporter of councillor Manik announced the programme will begin as mayor Sayeed Khokon had talked to the MP and assured him of giving due honour.

Supporters of both groups continued demonstration until mayor Sayeed Khokon reached there at about 4:00pm. The mayor then inaugurated the playground.

The mayor said Shaheed Hazi Abdul Alim Playground was one of the 12 modern playgrounds selected for renovation under ‘Jal Sabuje Dhaka Project’.
