Abrar Killing Court accepts charge sheet, issues arrest warrant for 4

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka on Monday accepted the charge sheet against 25 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League over the murder of the Bangladesh University of Technology student Abrar Fahad.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam also issued warrant for the arrest of four absconding suspects Morshed-Uz-Zaman Madol Zisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim, Morshed Amatya Islam and Mujtaba Rafid, also the one of the residents of  room where Abrar was tortured on October 6 for hours leading to his death on October 7 in Sher-e-Bangla Hall.

The court ordered the police stations concerned to submit their reports by December 3 over the arrests.

On November 13, Detective Branch pressed charges against 25 activists of BUET Chhhatra League in the murder case.

In the charge sheet, the case investigator, Inspector Wahiduzzaman, named 60 people as prosecution witnesses.

Earlier, DMP’s additional commissioner Monirul Islam at a briefing in its media centre said they had identified 11 among the 25 students who were directly involved in torturing Abrar.

About the probable motive, Monirul said that Abrar was not tortured and killed for a single reason, rather the killers claimed that the ‘defiant attitude’ of Abrar, his social media posts and critical views, and his possible involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir and banned Hizb ut-Tahrir were among the reasons that instigated them to torture him.

The detectives named 25 students of the university, including 19 who were named in the first information report filed with the Chawkbazar police station by his father Barkat Ullah.

Abrar, 21, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department, was reportedly beaten to death by Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders for his critical views in Facebook on recently inked India-Bangladesh deals.

The killing triggered widespread protests.

According the Detective Branch investigators, BUET Chhatra League general secretary Mehedi Hasan Russel of civil engineering department, vice-president Muhtasim Fuad of civil engineering, organising secretary Mehedi Hasan Robin, information and research affairs secretary Anik Sarkar, deputy social welfare secretary Ifti Mosharrf Sakal, sports secretary Meftahul Islam Zion of naval architecture and marine engineering, Moniruzzaman Monir, 21, of water resources, Muzahidur Rahman Muzahid of civil engineering departments,  Majedur Rahman of marine engineering,  Khandaker Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Hossen Mohammad Toha, Mohammad Akash of civil engineering, Mohammad Shamim Billah of the marine engineering department, Muntasir Alam Jemi of chemical engineering, Mohammad Moaj Abu Huraira and ASM Nazmus Sadat were named in the FIR and also named in the charge sheet.

They also named Ishtiaq Hasan Munna, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Amit Saha, SM Mahmud Setu and Mizanur Rahman in the charge sheet although they were not initially named in the complaint.

All of them were involved with the politics aligned to the ruling Awami League, according to the BCL, investigators and fellow students.

Abrar on October 5 criticised the government on a Facebook post for allowing India to withdraw water from the Feni River of Bangladesh, access the Mongla seaport and for agreeing to supply gas to India.
