BNP demands judicial probe into Mushtaq’s death in jail

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday demanded the formation of a neutral, transparent and independent judical inquiry into the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in detention in Kashimpur Jail.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a press statement condemned the death of Mushtaq, who was arrested under Digital Security Act in 2020 for allegedly criticising the government in a Facebook post, in jail.

The death of Mushtaq proved that nobody is safe and there is no security of life even in custody or jail, Fakhrul said.

Fakhrul alleged that death of Mushtaq may be caused for torture on him in jail.

Earlier many people have faced extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances for criticising the government, Fakhrul said.

He also demanded unconditional release of cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, who was also arrested past year and has been in jail since his arrest.

Arrested in early May 2020 for a Facebook post allegedly criticising the government and failure to tackle COVID-19 situation, Mushtaq died in Kashimpur High Security Jail on Thursday night.

The court rejected his bail prayers six times during his nine months’ detention.
