EC gets poor response
On the first two days few voters turned out to collect their Smart National Identity Cards, Election Commission officials said.
On Monday, the first day only 891 NID card holders collected their smart cards from the Siddheswari Girls College camp, though 4,126 cards were ready for delivery, EC officials told New Age.
NID card holders living at Kakrail, DIT colony and New Bailey Road who could not take their smart cards on the first day have to collect them now from the election office at Segunbagicha, they said.
Only 800 NID card holders took their smart cards from the Uttara High School and College camp on Monday though 4,714 smart cards were ready for delivery, said EC officials.
They said that now the remaining voters living in sector one and two of Uttara Model Town have to
collect their smart cards from the election office at Uttara.
On Tuesday, the second day about 25 per cent of the NID card holders collected their smart cards from the Ramna and the Uttra camps, said EC officials.
Today the EC would be able to provide the second day’s actual number of smart card collectors, said senior district election officer Mohammad Shah Alam.
EC officials said that some of voters might have changed their addresses since 2008 when they were registered.
They said that they expected that smart card collection would increase on the weekends.
Though there is no dearth of interests about the smart cards fewer voters collected them on the first two days only because many people did not understand how and from where they could be collected, said election commissioner Md Shah Newaz.
He said that smart card collection would increase within a week or two.
EC officials said that distribution of smart cards for the voters of ward-1 of Dhaka North City Corporation would continue until October 22.
The distribution of smart cards for the voters of ward 19 of Dhaka South City Corporation would continue until Monday.
