Left parties urged to unite, emerge as alternative force

Communist Party of Bangladesh on Friday inaugurated its four-day-long 11th congress with a call to other left parties to get united and emerge as alternative force in the interest of taking them to the state power.
The inaugural session of the party began with a cultural function where artistes of Udichi Shilpi Gosthi performed at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan, at 2:00pm.
The cultural function was followed by hoisting of national and party flags and placing wreaths at the temporary memorial of the martyred of War of Independence, by the party leaders and representatives of different left parties.
A sudden downpour somewhat marred the festivity of the inaugural session as the programme was organised in the open space of the historic field.
Soaked, the party leaders went on with their speeches, while many of the activists listened to them.
CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim, addressing the inaugural session said the people had lost their confidence in both the ruling Awami League and another former ruling party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, due what he said to ‘their anti-people activities.’
‘As people do not have any confidence in Awami League and BNP who could be their alternative choice,’ he said, adding, Awami League has failed and the BNP has failed more than the Awami League.
Selim said the left-leaning political parties could be the champion of democracy and take them to the state power if they get united and form an alternative force.
He urged all left-leaning political parties to get united if they wanted to see an end to the bourgeois rule of Awami League and BNP.
CPB president claimed that the country now lacked of democratic rule and that the people had also lost their democratic rights, such as voting rights,
under the rule of Awami League.
He said the fate of the people of Bangladesh would not be changed as long as the bourgeois rule exists here.
Manzurul Ahsan Khan termed CPB a party of the common people, including, the labourers and the farmers and said that CPB had been doing politics in the interest of people since its journey.
He said many conspiracies were hatched by internal and external quarters to destroy CPB but the party could not be destroyed due to its root founded in the common people.
Jashimuddin Mondal, Shahidullah Chowdhury and CPB general secretary Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed, among others, also addressed the inaugural session.
Twenty six representatives from across different left political parties coming from India, Nepal, United Kingdom, Vietnam, Germany, Russia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China and North Korea joined the opening session.
Leaders and activists of CPB brought out a rally from Suhrawardy Udyan after the inaugural session. It ended at the central Shahid Minar after parading Shahbagh and TSC streets of Dhaka University.
