Discrimination increases in society: Serajul Islam Chy

Professor emeritus of Dhaka University Serajul Islam Choudhury on Friday said that discrimination continued to increase in the society keeping pace with the development because of non-materialisation of the spirit of liberation war.
‘We dreamt of establishing social ownership after the country’s independence but personal ownership has been established in the country,’ he said.
Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day central organisational conference of Ganasanghati Andolon at National Press Club, Serajul said Bangladesh was officially declared as People’s Republic, but virtually it could not be materialised yet.
Ganasanghati Andolon, founded in 2003 as a left-leaning platform, convened the two-day conference to declare it as a political party as well as to form a new committee, approve its constitution and select its polls symbol.
Serajul said that the dream behind the country’s independence was to bring changes in the society in terms of establishing social equality, but after independence personal dream got priority for realisation.
He said that the existing three education systems – Bangla medium, English medium and Madrasah – were also responsible for creating class division in the society.
The professor emeritus said that there was no more exercise of knowledge and the level of quality education was depleting fast like the fall of groundwater layer in the educational institutions.
He called upon people to get united for getting emancipation from the authoritarian capitalism now existing in the country.
Economist Anu Muhammad, member secretary of the national committee to protect oil, gas, mineral resources, power and ports, said that the Awami League-led government was trying to hide its autocratic characteristics with carrying out some visible development works.
He said that the incumbent government claimed that they were secular in character and imbued with the spirit of liberation war, but under their rule the religious minorities were coming under frequent attacks.
Anu said that arrangement has been made by the government to destroy many state resources including the forests in the interest of neighboring country India.
Indicating recent death threats to him, he said that the government was trying to create panic among people by killing, enforcing disappearance and threatening people so that they could not wage any movement against its anti-nation activities.
Jahangirnagar University professor Naseem Akhter Hussain said that 14 crore people were being exploited for the consumption of two crore people of the country.
Ganasanghati Andolon chief coordinator Zonayed Saki, presiding over the inaugural session, said that the attacks on the religious minorities were being carried out in connivance with the ruling party men.
He bitterly criticized the government for claiming them as the ‘champion’ of the war of liberation and for deliberately failing to ensure security of the religious minorities and other people of the country.
Saki also criticized the Bangladesh Nationalist Party for doing politics only for power not for the people and termed the party as anti-people party.
Dhaka University professor Ahmed Kamal and coordinator of the democratic left alliance Subhrangshu Chakraborty, among others, addressed the inaugural session, also attended by representatives of different left-leaning parties and distinguished persons including veteran freedom fighter Zafrullah Chowdhury and presidium member of Communist party of Bangladesh Sajjad Jahir Chandan.
