Elderly Hindu woman dies in fire at Nasirnagar

An octogenarian Hindu woman was killed as her house caught fire reportedly during cooking while another Hindu house was set on fire by unknown miscreants at Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria Wednesday evening.
Unknown miscreants set fire to the cowshed at the house of Nasirnagar upazila parishad vice-chairman Anjan Kumar Deb, a Hindu by religion, at Nasirnagar upazila town, said Brahmanbaria superintendent of police Mizanur Rahman.
No casualties were reported from the arson attack, he added.
Niyati Chowdhury, 80, was killed as fire broke out at her house at Nasirpur village of the upazila while she was cooking in the evening,
Mizanur said.
He said that Niyati lived alone at the house.
Nasirnagar police officer-in-charge Shawkat Hossain said that they heard that an elderly Hindu woman died in fire at Nasirpur village.
He said that they could confirm the cause of the fire after investigation.
Nasirnagar Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad general secretary Sujit Kumar, however, smelt a rat in the death of Niyati in fire.
‘In the given situation of repeated arson attacks in the locality the accident is mysterious,’ he said.
This was the second time that miscreants set fire to the house of Anjan, also a ruling Awami League leader. On November 5, unknown miscreants set fire to a storehouse of jute sticks at the house.
The police on Monday announced a Tk 1 lakh bounty for assistance in capturing people involved in arson attacks on houses of the Hindus at Nasirnagar.
In continuation of the attacks, miscreants set fire to the house of Chhottu Lal Das of Paschimpara of Nasirnagar early Sunday.
Earlier miscreants had set fire to at least six houses of Hindus in November 4-5.
Police on Wednesday arrested Bangladesh Nationalist Party president of Nasirnagar union unit Amirul Hossain Chakdar, 45, for his alleged involvement with the attacks on Hindu community people at Nasirnagar in Bhahmanbaria on October 30.
Officer-in-charge of Nasirnagar police station Abu Jafar said they detained the BNP leader at his house at Dutta para of sadar upazila Wednesday morning.
With the fresh arrest the total number of detained person has raised to a total of 85.
This spate of attacks followed October 30 atrocities when about 200 houses and business establishments and 22 temples of the religious minority group were vandalised and robbed at Nasirnagar upazila town and Haripur union.
The attacks came following two rallies organised by Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat and Towhidi Janata of qoumi madrassah group, backed by Hefazat-e-Islam demanding punishment of Hindu youth Rasraj Das for allegedly sharing a doctored photo showing an idol set on the Kaaba on his Facebook wall on October 28.
