DU HALL UNITS OF BCL: No committees announced in council session

Ruling Awami League-backed student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League held the council session of its hall units at Dhaka University on Sunday but announced no committee.

‘We will announce the hall committees after scrutinising the curriculum vitae of the aspirants later…The new committee of Dhaka University unit will be formed following discussions with policymakers,’ said Dhaka University unit president Abid al Hasan.
Addressing as chief guest at the council session at the base of Aparajeya Bangla, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, urged the leaders and activists to develop themselves with the principles and ideals of country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and be imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War.
Several leaders who had been suspended from the organisation in the past for criminal activities are forwarding CVs for leading posts in 18 hall unit.
Some candidates named in cases of murder and drug, extortion and illegal activities and non-students are also lobbying and campaigning for getting vital positions on the committees.
Sohan Khan, candidate of Sergeant Jahurul Hoque Hall unit was named in an attempt to murder case filed with New Market police station. He was allegedly involved in biting up another Chhatra League leader Sagar Hossain Sohag on January 7.
Bulbul Sheikh, another candidate for the hall unit was named in a murder case filed with Gopalganj police station. The case statement said that he hacked a man named Quddus in the head to kill him.
Rashed Mahmud, an aspirant for Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall unit faces an allegation of drug business in the Curzon Hall area. In January, he was arrested with 150 bear cans and foreign wine, but his followers took him away from the police. He was named in a case filed with Shahbagh police station.
Allegations have it that Surya Sen Hall unit vice-president Golam Sarwar and some of his followers do not pay bills for meals at hall canteen and evict legal students from their rooms.
Dhaka University unit Chhatra League president Abid Al Hasan said theat they select the leaders on the committees after a proper review of the activities of the candidates. ‘If they have any link with illegal activities, they will not be considered.’ 
The tenure of the hall committees expired more than three years and a half ago while the tenure of the university unit committee expired five months ago.
