Democracy needs active media role: Inu

Minister for information Hasanul Haque Inu on Tuesday said that the media should play a pro-active role in preserving democracy and upholding the values of the constitution of the country.
At the same time, the media must work responsibly, he observed.
‘We believe in freedom of expression. Right to Information Act has been enacted so that all get information,’ he said while speaking as chief guest at the first national conference on mass communication and journalism at Dhaka University.
The Media must criticise the government but they have to keep in mind that it should be based on facts, in no way biased. 
In the two-day conference, arranged by mass communication and journalism department of Dhaka University, around 45 papers on different perspectives of media will be presented. 
The inaugural session was presided over by Professor Mofizur Rahman, chairmen of the department, while vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, prime minister’s information adviser Iqbal Sobahan Chowdhury, BFUJ president Manzurul Islam Bulbul also addressed the function.
Chief information commissioner Professor Golam Rahman in his keynote speech said people no longer relied on BTV as it had no credibility.
Arefin Siddique said that responsible and professional practice of the press serve people with correct information and help them enhance their knowledge and awareness.
