Democracy now in danger: Khaleda

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday claimed that democracy that was attained at the cost of blood of many martyrs was now in danger.
In a message on the occasion of ‘fall of autocracy and freedom of democracy day’ to be observed today, Khaleda said the character of a cruel, authoritarian and
one-party rule was now coming out through the behaviour of the incumbent ruling class.
She alleged that people’s civic freedom was confiscated by one-party rule which held the whole nation hostage through holding unilateral election of January 5, 2014.
Khaleda said the party of one-party BAKSL spirit and autocracy of the 1980’s together were gradually destroying the democratic institutions.
The ‘undemocratic evil force’ continued to snatch people’s fundamental rights enshrined in the constitution, she lamented.
The BNP chairperson urged people to get united to resist the ‘evil force’ to give democracy a permanent shape.
Khaleda said December 6 was a memorable day in the country’s national history.
On this day in 1990 military autocrat HM Ershad fell from power after a nine-year movement, she added.
