CID meets with Atiur at his house

A four-member team of the Criminal Investigation Department on Monday discussed with Bangladesh Bank’s former governor Atiur Rahman developments over $101milion reserve heist from the New York Federal Reserve, in early February.
‘It was mere a discussion since the incident took place during his tenure. It was neither an interview nor an interrogation,’ said the CID’s organised crime special superintendent, Mollah Nazrul Islam.
The CID official said the team ‘discussed’ with Atiur for an hour and a half at his Dhanmondi residence in the capital, as the part of their ongoing investigation.
Atiur could not be reached and that his cell phone was found switched off.
On February 4-5, $101 million was stolen online from the Bangladesh Bank reserve kept with the NY Fed Reserve through some settlements with Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation in the Philippines and Pan Asia Banking Corporation in Sri Lanka.
Central bank officials said that $20 million remitted to Sri Lanka was later recovered, while $15 million out of $81 million stolen from its New York Fed account was recovered through diplomatic maneuvering.
More than five weeks into the heist, Atiur Rahman had resigned from his post.
