Duty of politicians to hold free, fair elections: CJ

Chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha on Saturday said the Supreme Court scrapped the caretaker government system to keep the judiciary neutral and independent.
‘When a retired chief justice was selected as the chief advisor of the caretaker government, questions were raised over his neutrality. And if he was not neutral, all the verdicts, given by him, became questionable’, the chief justice said while addressing the national judicial conference at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.
Holding a free and fair election is the duty of the politicians not the duty of the judiciary, Sinha said.
The rules and regulations to change the government are mentioned in the constitution, he added.
Appellate Division justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah presided over the conference while land minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif, state minister for information and communication technology division Zunaid Ahmed Palak were, among others, present.
