Consensus needed for fair polls: president
The president, Abdul Hamid, said on Tuesday that consensus among political parties was needed for holding free and fair elections and democracy moved forward through mutual trust and confidence.
He made the remarks in separate talks with the Bangladesh Jatiya Party and Bangladesh Tariqat Federation he held at Bangabhaban as part of his ongoing talks with the registered political parties on the reconstitution of the Election Commission, president’s press secretary Joynal Abedin told New Age after the talks
In the talks, BJP, a component of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance, proposed that business community should be well represented in the Election Commission and the search committee while ruling Awami League-led alliance component Bangladesh Tariqat Federation proposed that both the forums must be formed with people who believed in the spirit of the Liberation War.
BTF chairman Nazibul Basher Maizvandary led the party’s 10-member delegation while BJP chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partha led his party’s eight-member delegation in the talks.
In five-point proposals on search committee and nine-point proposals for the commission, BJP proposed that nine Election Commissions should be set up in eight divisional headquarters each headed by an election commissioner with the central commission in the capital headed by the chief election commissioner, Andaleeve said emerging from bangabhaban.
In 17-point proposals placed before the president, Tariqat Federation proposed enactment of a law on appoint of the chief and other election commissioners and financial independence of the commission, Nazibul said emerging from Bangabhaban.
The president initiated the formal talks with political parties for formation of the new commission by holding talks with BNP on December 18, 2016.
The tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led commission would expire in February.
