Samyabadi Dal wants constitution council

Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal and National Awami Party faction led by Mozaffer Ahmed, on Wednesday placed separate proposals for reconstituting the election commission, during meetings with president Abdul Hamid.
Samyabadi Dal proposed forming a constitutional council comprising prime minister, speaker, chief Justice, leader of the opposition and attorney general to propose names of election commissioners to the president.
The NAP faction proposed taking steps by the government to enact a law for reconstituting the election commission.
Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua led the party’s 12-member delegation in the dialogue held at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
During the 55-minute meeting, Samyabadi Dal placed a nine-point proposal on the formation of a search committee and the new EC.
The proposal included enacting a law as per the constitution to appoint election commissioners and choosing non-communal, progressive and skilled administrators as commissioners.
Expressing gratitude to the president for inviting them, the delegation said that it was a necessary step towards reconstituting the EC.
President Hamid commented that the proposal by Samyabadi Dal would play a positive role in forming a strong EC, press secretary of the president Zoyanal Abedin told New Age.
NAP executive president Amina Ahmed led the party’s 10-member delegation in the other dialogue held at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
During the meeting, NAP placed a seven-point proposal that included forming a search committee incorporating former justices, former vice-chancellors of public universities and other professions who have demonstrated a belief in the spirit of the Independence War.
The president initiated formal talks with political parties on reconstituting EC by holding dialogue with Bangladesh Nationalist Party on December 18 last year.
He took the initiative as the tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February.
