PM slates media for shaping Jamaat-Shibir plot to kill MP Liton

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday criticized a section of media for helping Jamaat-Shibir to shape their ploy to annihilate Gaibandha lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton through their constant move to portray him as a ‘rude person’.
Jamaat-Shibir had been making constant attempts to kill him as he put up resistance against the evil force when they unleashed a reign of terror in the area following trial of the war criminals, she said.
‘Instead of focusing on the danger and repeated attempt on his life, the media branded him as a naughty person centering on an incident of firing by him to save his life but unfortunately injuring a nine-year-old boy at Sundarganj in 2015,’ she said.
‘At that time Jamaat-Shibir men were lying in ambush to kill him. But he luckily survived by firing in self-defence. But media never focused on the fact,’ the prime minister added.
Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, said this in her inaugural speech at year’s maiden joint meeting of the party’s working committee and advisory council at her Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka in the evening.
Holding BNP-Jamaat nexus responsible for killing Manjurul Islam Liton, the PM said that Awami League lawmaker Shah AMS Kibria and Ahsanullah Master were killed when Awami League was in opposition while Manjurul Islam, a marine graduate from London, was killed when the party is in power.
Manjurul Islam devoted himself to politics as he loved the people and the country, she said adding that ‘we cannot accept the killing.’
The central committee will formulate the modalities of the January 11 discussion with the president on formation of next Election Commission in addition to finalising the programmes for Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day and Amar Ekushey.
At the outset of the meeting, the prime minister congratulated the leaders and workers of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the party-backed student organisation, for their contribution to the country’s all achievements.
She recalled her affiliation with the BCL as the elected vice-president of the Students Union of Badrunessa College. BCL has a glorious role in achievements of the country, she said.
Urging the party leaders and workers to resist the killers and militants, she said people should be made aware of those who, by their character, are killers.
She also called upon them to go to the people and project before them the development of the country during the last three years of the Awami League government.
‘Development is visible in every sector as Awami League remains in power for the second consecutive term,’ she said urging the party leaders to focus on that particularly.
Sheikh Hasina said no party in the past could run the government so successfully. Bangladesh is a surprise for the world as no country could show such socioeconomic progress like Bangladesh, she added.
Highlighting economic development of the country, particularly in rural areas, the PM said that Awami League thinks for changing the lot of the people while BNP always remains busy with making their own fortune.
Earlier, central leaders of BCL greeted the prime minister with a flower bouquet on the occasion of the 69th founding anniversary of the organisation.
The prime minister along with the BCL leaders cut a cake marking the occasion.
