President for dialogue among parties

The president, Abdul Hamid, on Tuesday stressed the need for dialogue or discussions among the political parties as two Islamic parties – Khelafat Majlish and Jamiat-e-Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh – demanded election-time interim government.
The president held talks with the two parties at Bangabhban as part of his ongoing talks with political parties on the reconstitution of the Election Commission.
A Bangabhaban release said that the president told the parties that beside the government, the political parties also should come forward and play active role in ensuring free and fair elections.
It also said that the president stressed the need for discussion or dialogue between the political parties saying that the discussion could help reducing the gap between them.
‘The political parties have to take initiatives on their own to hold the dialogue,’ the president was quoted in the release to have said.
Emerging from Bangabhaban, Khelafat Majlish secretary general Ahmed Abdul Quader, who headed an 11-member delegation, told reporters that they placed seven point proposals on the Election Commission reconstitution.
He said that they proposed an election-time government to be formed with representatives from major political parties and headed by the president.
He said that they also advocated for the appointment of a woman and an Islamic scholar as election commissioners.
They also proposed enactment of a law on the appointment of election commissioners but said that the law should not be passed by the current parliament ‘having no people’s representation.’
Jamiat-e-Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh executive president Mohammad Wakkas led a 10-member delegation in the talks.
Emerging from Bangabhaban, its leaders told the reporters that they proposed election-time government under the president, enactment of a law on appointment to the commission and appointment of a former chief justice as the chief election commissioner.
The president started the talks on the reconstitution of the commission with the political parties on December 18, 2016 as the tenure of Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led commission would expire in February 2017.
