Arafat Sunny denied bail, sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Tuesday denied bail to Bangladesh national cricketer Arafat Sunny and ordered him to be sent to prison after completion of his remand in a case filed under Information and Communication Technology Act 2006.
Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Zakir Hossain Tipu passed the order after the police produced Sunny about 3:00pm on completion of his one-day remand.
Defence pleader Muraduzzaman filled the bail petition claiming that Sunny had not been involved with the alleged offence.
Mohammadpur police sub-inspector Yahiya, also the investigation officer of the case, said that the accused Sunny had given important information during the remand, which should not be disclosed for the sake of the ongoing investigation.
During the hearing, the plaintiff claimed that Sunny had given her the nikahnama or marriage contract. If the nikanama was fake as claimed by Sunny’s lawyer, then the plaintiff would lodge another case against Sunny for forgery, she said.
Sunny was arrested from his Aminbazar residence on Sunday.
A 23-year-old woman, who claimed to be Sunny’s wife, sued the cricketer for ‘threatening her online’.
According to the case statement filed on January 5, Sunny threatened to make public indecent photos of her on Facebook.
Sunny, while speaking to the police on Sunday and during the remand on Monday, denied the allegations and said that they were fabricated. He, however, acknowledged his acquaintance with the woman.
In the case statement, the plaintiff claimed to be in a relationship with Sunny for the past seven years and also said that the couple got married on December 4, 2014.
However, according to statement, neither of the families knew about their wedding. She claimed that despite her repeated requests Sunny refused to take her home.
On Monday, the woman filed another case against Sunny accusing him of seeking Tk 20 lakh as dowry.
Another metropolitan court summoned Sunny and his mother and asked them to be present before the court on April 5.
