Police file case, helper lands in jail

The police a case with Matiranga police station on Saturday against the driver and the helper of the truck for ploughing through a crowed killing eight Buddhist pilgrims and injured seven at Alutila under Matiranga in Khagrachari on Friday.
Matiranga police station officer-in-charge Shahadot Hossain Tito said that produced the detained helper Md Sumon, who was driving the truck during the accident, before Khagrachari Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court Saturday seeking him in police custody for five days for interrogation.
The court, however, remanded Sumon to jail keeping the police petition pending.
The district superintendent of police, Md Majid Ali, said that police were conducting drives at possible places to nab the driver, Md Palash, who left the truck to his helper, Md Sumon who had no driving licence.
‘We are conducting drives to nab Palash as per the information extracted from Sumon,’ he said.
‘In primary investigation, it was proved that it was an accident, but many people are trying to colour it otherwise in social media. It might hinder the proper investigation,’ Majid said.
Detained Sumon is a resident of Chhota Merung area under Dighinala in Khagrachari.
Sumon, while he was at the police station, told this correspondent that his truck was on the way to Khagrachari from Comilla, where they loaded it with stone Thursday night, and the driver left the truck to him at Jaliapara under Matiranga on Friday at about 8:00am. 
He said that he had been driving the truck and claimed that he faced the accident at Alutila while giving side for a bus.
All the deceased were cremated at their respective villages on Saturday.
As six of the bodies – Neimra Marma, 40, Ukraching Marma, 7, Uchinu Marma, 17, Pulu Marma, 16, Tuntuni, 6, and Boby Marma, 13, all villagers of Choungrachhari village under Mahalchhari upazila in Khagrachhari, reached their villages in the afternoon, the family members as well as the villagers broke into tears.
Their bodies were cremated at Sammilita Cremation ground at the same time.
