EC reconstitution Search committee likely to recommend names today

The search committee for the Election Commission reconstitution is set to submit its report to the president Abdul Hamid naming 10 people for the chief election commissioner and four election commissioners.
‘The search committee is scheduled for Monday evening to meet the president with its report,’ president’s press secretary Joynal Abdin told New Age on Sunday.
He said that the outgoing commission was also scheduled for Tuesday to meet the president while the tenures of the chief election commissioner and three other election commissioners would expire on Wednesday.
The tenure of the rest election commissioner would expire on February 14.
Before going to Bangabhaban to see the president, the search committee is scheduled for 5:00pm today to sit in a meeting at the Supreme Court Judges Lounge to finalise the list of the 10 names, two each for the chief election commissioner and four commissioners, the Cabinet Division additional secretary Abdul Wadud told New Age on Sunday.
Officials of the Cabinet Division, which is giving secretarial assistance to the search committee, said that the committee completed scrutinising information about 20 individuals shortlisted by the committee from the lists given by political parties..
They said that the committee might suggest the president that he should make public the names recommended by committee as 12 eminent citizens with whom the committee exchanged views urged the committee to make the the names public for transparency.
On January 30, 12 eminent citizens suggested the search committee that it should take initiative to make public its recommendations with reasons behind the recommendations.
On January 31, the committee shortlisted 20 names from 125 names proposed by 28 political parties including the ruling Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The committee, however, did not disclose the names saying that the committee would submit 10 names for the commission to the president by February 8.
On January 25, president Abdul Hamid formed the six-member search committee led by Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain of the Appellate Division asking it to recommend two names against each positions in the commission — the chief election commissioner and four election commissioners — in 10 working days.
The president held talks with 31 of the 40 registered political parties on the reconstitution of the commission between December 18, 2016 and January 18, 2017.
