3 workers killed yet again in Sylhet landslide

Three workers were killed in a landslide at a sandstone quarry in Sylhet early Friday, police and local people said.
Out of three, bodies of Zakir Hossain, 20, and Tula Miah, 25, of Gulergaon village under sadar upazila of Sunamganj were seized from relatives in Sunamganj, the officer-in-charge of Goainghat police, Delwar Hossain, said.
The bodies were sent to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
He told New Age that the body of Parimal was seized from Netrokona and was kept at the Sadar Hospital there for a post-mortem examination.
Local people said a group of workers were extracting sandstone pebbles from beneath a 30-feet deep quarry, flouting a High Court ban, near Bisnakandi stone quarry under Goainghat upazila, early Friday.
It was around 2:30am, when a huge chunk of soil collapsed on the workers, killing the trio, the locals said.
Stone traders Baset Miah and his associates, who allegedly had employed the men into illegal mining, retrieved two bodies immediately, in an effort to hide the accident, local people said.
Delwar confirmed New Age of the fatal incident and said the stone traders did not inform police of the landslide and recovered the bodies by themselves before police reached the site.
‘Based on the information gathered from other workers, the dead bodies of two victims were seized by police in Sunamganj while those were being transported to Gulergaon village, the police officer said.
‘A case was underway as of Friday evening and that police were trying to arrest the stone traders,’ Delwar told New Age.
Earlier on January 23, in another landslide at Shah Arefin Tila, a hillock along the Companiganj border, some 5-km off Bisnakandi stone quarry, five workers were killed.
